Are you considering moving to the Brainerd Lakes area but don’t know what to expect? In this episode of Brainerd Redefined, I’m going to tell you the three most important things you need to know before moving to Brainerd Lakes. We’ll look at everything from traffic to weather so you’re best prepared before you pack your bags.
Brainerd Lakes Traffic
The first thing you should know about Brainerd Lakes before moving here is the traffic. Does traffic really suck that bad? Fortunately, in the Brainerd Lakes area, there’s not a ton of traffic—except for Friday afternoon and Sunday evening.
These are the days when people are coming up from the Twin Cities to enjoy their cabin. You’ll see traffic backed up at the 371 and 210 Corridor all the way past Walmart. For the most part, though, traffic isn’t that bad. Just try to avoid the Friday rush hour from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm and Sunday from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm when everyone’s heading south.
The Cost Of Living
People ask me all the time if it’s really that expensive to live in the Brainerd Lakes area. While we have some of the cheapest housing in the entire state, prices vary depending on whether you want to be on a large lake, small lake, or off water. To give you an idea, you can get a very nice three-bedroom, two-bath house in the Brainerd Lakes area for under $300,000.

All Four Seasons
The last thing you need to know about is the weather. Is it that cold in the Brainerd Lakes area? The answer is yes—at least in January and February. During the other 10 months, Brainerd has some of the best weather in the entire country.
We have all four seasons here, so you get to enjoy the leaves changing in fall and the temperature is dropping. Then, you can enjoy the nice warm summer months where many times we see 90+ degree weather. Of course, everybody loves playing when things start to green back up. Even in the winter months, people love to ice fish, ski, and snowmobile in the Brainerd Lakes area. We have plenty of recreation throughout the year.
